21st September 2020

After what has been an exceptionally strange 6 months for the team at Hillsgreen, we hit the ground running in September. We are officially back in the office and are enjoying face-to-face communication again. To end our first week back working at Hillsgreen HQ, we had a very exciting visit on Friday 4th September 2020.

Co-op CEO visits Hills Green Farm

That’s it, you heard us right – Steve Murrells stuck his wellies on and visited Hills Green Farm, along with the Co-op agriculture and milk buying teams. We were truly privileged to get to meet Steve and his team, to find out their opinions on agriculture, food production and all other things in-between.

The day started off with socially distanced brews and bakes courtesy of Mrs Venables (arguably one of the best bakers going). We had an open and frank discussion about the dairy industry, succession within farming and the impact that Covid-19 has had on farmers.

The Co-op has had great success with their Co-op Dairy Group, putting supplier relationships at the forefront of their minds to ensure that every stakeholder within the supply chain gets a fair deal. There are currently around 173 farms within the group who all supply milk to Co-op stores across the country.

Stabilising future investments

Throughout Covid-19 the dairy industry, in particular, suffered great losses. To show the support to dairy producers, the Co-op stood by their commitment to the industry despite a reduction in market pricing. Not only did this help farmers out in a time of need, but it really did highlight the importance of collaboration within the supply chain.

The power of a more reliable milk price should not be underestimated so we ended the morning with a brilliant farm walk to showcase the level of investment that can be made when there is support across the supply chain. Helping to secure the future of our farms.

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank Steve and his team for taking the time to visit the farm. It was a great day with beautiful sunshine and inspiring conversations.
